Dr. A K Mukherjee

Completing B.Sc. Hons.In Botany from Presidency College, Calcutta, Prof. Mukherjee did his M.Sc. In Botany and Ph.D. in Plant Biochemistry from Burdwan University. Started his teaching career in Burdwan University Medical College in the year 1969 and served for more than five years. Joined the Burdwan University Post Graduate Botany Department in 1974 and continued upto retirement on August 2005. In the same year, he joined Bengal College of Engineering and Technology as Professor of Biotechnology and Dean (Academic), Durgapur.
He was a short time visiting Professor in twelve National Universities from time to time. He was ranked in the First position in “Radiological Safety Officer” course organized by Bhaba Atomic Research Center. Undertook training in HPLC technique organized by M/S Waters at Vienna and received ‘Best Performer’ award.
Obtaining NRC Post-doc fellowship from Canada, spent more than one year in teaching & research in University of Toronto. While working with Professor A. Guha,he first time cloned “Biotin’ gene in fast plasmid replicating E. Coli. During 1979, received the most prestigious “Muscular Dystrophy Association” Fellowship from USA and joined Harvard Medical School for both teaching and research. He had a most fruitful time when he worked with Profr. A. Guha and two Nobel Lauriates – Professor David Baltimore & Professor Walter Gilbert when he reported first time that a single-stranded 4S RNA could inhibit protein synthesis. The sample was taken by Professor Sidney Altman and proved that as Enzyme. Later, he received Nobel Prize jointly with Professor Cech for the work on ‘Ribozyme’
