Green initiatives

Green initiatives at Adamas university

The University's green initiatives are divided into two groups:

  • Green campus
  • Green IT

Green campus

The University would like to set up a green campus by minimizing energy consumption and the adverse impact of pollution in the environment.

Actions taken so far:

  • Trees have been planted across the campus.
  • Battery-driven cars are being used for commuting around the campus.
  • Energy-efficient air conditioners have been installed.

Short-term plans

  • Setting up information kiosks, with touchscreen panels, for both students and their parents, thereby encouraging a culture of paper-less communication
  • Utilising more renewable energy like solar water heating systems, solar panels, refrigerators, etc.
  • Using non-toxic pest control
  • Using compact fluorescent bulbs that use less energy and give off less heat and which, in turn, will save the energy used to cool the building
  • Buying and using local materials and food items as these will have lower transportation costs because of the lower amount of energy needed to move the same
  • Ensuring that electricity is consumed during office hours only
  • Encouraging vendors to use minimum chemicals
  • Creating dedicated no-vehicle zones in the academic areas
  • Doing away with the use of plastic materials
  • Encouraging students and faculty members to use bicycles and bikes that operate on rechargeable batteries (similar to the initiative already taken by IIT Mumbai)

Long-term plans

  • Installing solar PV Module on the roof with the required inverter and accessories. This will be directly connected with the Power Grid for storing purposes so that this power can be sold to the concerned power distribution company at a higher rate compared to the buying rate, which is regularly paid to the power company. The University is expected to get a subsidy from the Renewable Energy Department of the Central Government or the nodal agency for this type of a project.
  • Reducing water usage by waste-water recycling, harvesting rainwater, etc.
  • Better waste management by turning food waste to compost, which will produce organic rich soil and by separating clinical and hazardous waste materials
  • Setting up proper ventilation system in the laboratories
  • Putting higher emphasis on quality over quantity regarding food in order to minimize wastage
  • Using low-flow plumbing fixtures that use less water per flush
  • Using Low VOC paints, which drastically limits any odorous, harmful, or irritating emissions.
  • Installing BMS with a state-of-the-art microprocessor-controlled power management system for the entire campus. The University's lighting, cooling and electricity utility system will be maintained by this system so that at least 30% of the energy can be saved. This may be made applicable for the new buildings in the campus

Green IT

Adamas University would like to set up a Green IT system through the practice of using computers and IT resources in a more efficient and environmentally-responsible way.

Actions taken so far:

  • Server virtualization has been provided in order to minimize the usage of energy for test purposes.
  • LCD monitors are being used to save energy.
  • Disposal of computers, servers and associated subsystems such as monitors, printers, storage devices, and networking and communications systems are being done efficiently and effectively with minimal or no impact on the environment

Short-term plans

  • Implementing mandatory sleep settings on all ITS-supported computers
  • Using software-based power management tools to reduce the usage of conventional power energy for all IT Infrastructure
  • Procurement of power-efficient IT equipment so that energy can be saved directly; the low heat emission will help reduce the use of air conditioners; and the low consumption will save the use of the UPS as well as battery
  • Implementing virtualization for the datacentre servers in order to have less power consumption, power backup, space and IT investment (e.g., by implementing VMWare, Microsoft Hypervisor, etc.)
  • Opting for VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) later by replacing the traditional desktop by VDI-enabling Thin client in order to save power. Cloud computing can also be thought of as one of the options that would save both cost and time.
  • Setting up full duplex printers, thereby reducing paper usage
  • Implementing NAS for various storage options as well as setting up a Document Management System for proper sorting as well as restoration of those files
  • Ensuring email-based communication, thereby reducing paper usage

Long-term plans

  • Implementing a digital library, thereby encouraging a paper-less environment
  • Implementing video conferencing facilities, thereby reducing travel cost related to visiting faculties in the University
  • Using 100% recycled paper, if at all it is absolutely necessary to be used
  • Communicating with students electronically via email, web conferencing, etc.
  • Participating in the Energy Star Low Carbon IT Campaign
