Career Options in Mathematics:

From science & technology to business& healthcare, mathematics is relevant to nearly all the industries. An accomplished mathematician has a wide array of career prospects. Mathematics is essential in the fields such as science, technology & engineering. The skills like problem-solving, decision making & critical thinking are highly preferable for a candidate in the present era of science & technology.

“You won’t see too many job postings for theoretical mathematicians, but where the field of study becomes especially valuable is in a graduate’s ability to apply mathematical concepts to solve any problem they put their mind to,” Thomas Goulding (lead faculty member for Northeastern University’s programs in artificial intelligence and analytics) says. “Mathematicians have strongly developed logical skills and decomposition skills, they’re very organized, and they can more easily attack big-picture problems.”

Mathematics can lead us to two distinct career directions: academia or industry. There is always an opportunity for a mathematician in teaching & research job along with a wide range of scope in various industry-related jobs in statistics, engineering, physical science, computer science, insurance, economics, astronomy, banking and accountancy.

Jobs directly related to the degree include:

  • Data analyst: Data analyst use mathematical & statistical analysis to solve complex problems in business & make strategic, logical data-driven decision. Statistical tools have been used to interpret data sets with predictive decision-making modeling.
  • Financial analyst: Financial analysts estimate the scope of investment in the bank, pension schemes, mutual funds & other business. Financial analysts evaluate past & present financial data to gain better insight into the economic condition for any scheme.
  • Teacher: After completing PH.D. one can apply for an assistant professor job in various college\universities. Schools also offer good jobs for mathematics graduates and postgraduates as a mathematics teacher in both the government as well as in the private sector.
  • Research scientist: Except academic jobs, mathematicians can apply for research-related jobs at good remuneration and package in Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), National Aeronautic Limited (NAL) and Society for Electronic Transaction and Security (SETS).
  • Operational Researcher: Operational researchers used mathematical skills to improve the operations of any organization. Graduate as well as post-graduate students can pursue this as their career.
  • Cryptographer: Intelligence agencies hire cryptographers for encoding & decoding sensible data to keep it safe from malicious hackers. Cryptography is an application of Number theory.
  • Meteorologist: A meteorologist job is to study the information obtained from the land, sea, upper atmosphere, and depending on these studies, he/she has to predict the weather. After completing post-graduation in Mathematics, one can apply in different sectors (both private and government) which do or use meteorological forecasts.
  • sector job: With the initiative of the Chancellor, Adamas University, a professional studies course has been introduced along with the regular core papers. It will prepare the students in soft skills so that he/she will be able to understand the intricacies of preparing for higher-level examinations e.g. IAS, IPS, WBCS & other govt. jobs. After completion of the postgraduate degree in Mathematics students can appear for the GATE exam. If a student can be able to crack the GATE exam then he/she can apply in all PSU companies such as HAL, ONGC, IOC, etc.

Further study: Further study is also an option for mathematics graduates. Postgraduate studies like M.SC. or PH.D. are mandatory for a career in academics.

Conclusion:

The graduation/post-graduation degree in mathematics provides students marketable attractive skills for various aspects of life. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job market for mathematicians is predicted to rise by a whopping 30 percent in this coming decade. So, in the present socio-economic scenario, the program may turn out to be a valuable asset to students.

The “New Normal” of Studying Psychology in Post COVID era

The great philosopher Socrates had once stated, “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new”. Perhaps there is nothing truer than this statement in today’s world. It is absolutely needless to mention the impact that COVID 19 imparted on our lives, be it the social, occupational or personal aspect of it. Practically we are living in an uncertain state with a constant fear of getting infected, and all our future plans on hold, our finances recessed and our social lives withdrawn.

But as the saying goes, “Every cloud has a silver lining”. Despite the immense detrimental and fatal blow to our lives, life during COVID 19 has seen lots of favourable changes as well. For instance, we are getting lot more time to spend with our families and pursue our passions. But life during lockdown also taught us a lot about understanding our mental health and to take care of it. As suggested by epidemiologists, psychological breakdown is the next wave of pandemic we’ll be fighting against after COVID-19. This automatically necessitates focusing on the study of human behavior elaborately.

Psychology, as the science of human behavior, has come a long way in the past century. Understanding and measuring human behavior generally involves administering tests and questionnaires in addition to studying behavior qualitatively. These constitute the traditional methods of studying human psychology. However, the last couple of months have witnessed a paradigm shift in the study of psychology. This transition can be noticed not only in classroom learning, but also in experiential learning. The “new normal” of studying psychology has ample implications in the area of studying human behavior.

Traditional methods of studying Psychology:

For decades together, scientists and academicians have relied on studying human behavior through several different techniques. Following are some of the traditional methods of studying psychology:

  • Classroom learning of psychological principles
  • Lab-based experiments
  • Paper-pencil tests
  • Computer-assisted testing
  • Clinical Internships
  • Research Internships

Studying psychology mandates practical applications of psychological principles. For instance, studying clinical psychotherapy is incomplete without the application of it on patients. Again, learning the methods of measuring behavior requires administering tests and questionnaires to a large sample. Being an applied field of science, psychologists chiefly work with primary data that are collected either in lab-based setup or through large scale survey. Even computer-assisted testing requires manual supervision. Specifically in our country, studying human behavior is a lot difficult than that in developed countries. Probably the most imperative rationale in this case is the lack of awareness about mental health and the stigma attached to it.

Not that these traditional methods are insufficient to study human behavior. But at the elementary level of studying psychology, these traditional methods often limit the learning due to lack of exposure to practical knowledge. For instance, undergraduate students are often barred from attending worldwide conventions. Again, finding solution to a research problem can also pose a challenge to students of elementary level, chiefly due to lack of expertise to collect primary data. But learning knows no limit. Specially in an applied field of science, learning is chiefly based on practical knowledge acquisition. Unfortunately, traditional methods of studying psychology hardly provides with this opportunities.

The “New Normal” of studying Psychology:

The last few months under lockdown has presented us with a plethora of new methods and opportunities of studying human behavior. Today our classroom learning has transformed to virtual learning. This has not only facilitated the metamorphosis of our everyday classroom learning to global level, but also brought about a paradigm shift in studying human psychology. For instance, the conventional lecture method has been replaced with demonstrations through videos and clippings. More importantly, virtual learning is being made possible through pre-recorded videos. This rather allows students to learn by watching the video over and over again for doubt clearance as per their convenience. Following are some of the new paradigms that are facilitating the study of human behavior.

  • Virtual interactive classes
  • Webinars/Online Workshops
  • Online Internships
  • Online Courses
  • Online Testing and Data Collection

Apart from taking virtual classes as per one’s own convenience, digital learning has facilitated exploring a lot many opportunities in the area of psychology. For instance, several online psychological workshops/seminars/conferences/courses are now being offered by national and international institutes/universities. Hence, it is now possible to attend international events and get exposed to different perspectives while sitting in the comfort of our homes. Again, enrolling in internship programmes has now become much easier since everything is in a virtual platform. Most importantly, conducting research has also got smoother as manually collecting data is no more possible. One can collect data using any virtual mode and that saves a lot of time, money and effort. Needless to say, virtual learning has introduced an absolutely new way of studying human behavior.

What Next?

Across the last few decades, studying human behavior was already undergoing transitions. This involved an integration of several fields of interdisciplinary research. For instance, techniques of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence are now being implicated for pattern recognitions in human behavior, as expressed in social networking sites. Consumer Psychology is another new area that integrates the understanding of human behavior in Marketing and Consumerism. Psychology, in today’s world, is not just a field of social science, but an interdisciplinary science of studying human behavior.

This further transition to virtual learning has simply aggravated the metamorphosis of this subject area. Post COVID era is going to witness a conglomeration of both physical as well as virtual studying of behavior. The “New Normal” paradigm of studying behavior will help overcoming the drawbacks of the traditional methods while at the same time will provide with more enriching exposures and ways to study human behavior.

Concluding Remarks:

Change doesn’t come on its’ own, but by building the new based on the old. Post COVID days have presented us with this opportunity to bring about this change. It is therefore, important that we embrace such changes in the paradigm of studying behavior. Only then can we adapt to the “New Normal” of studying Psychology and utilize this knowledge to its’ full potential.

Marketing Analytics – A New Dimension in Marketing

Introduction:

Marketing is a process which fulfills human and social needs. The core concept of marketing is to satisfy customers. Recent trends are driving this concept into a more integrated format. Once there was a time where innovation, information, ambitions, specifications, preferences, choices, opportunities were limited and markets were able to function with limited numbers of marketers and their ideology. This concept is facing change on the one hand with unprecedented growth and the potential impact of MSME’s, especially startups in the market. All this is impacting the way people consume.  Starting with the core proposition of marketing and the product-based framework of the 4Ps morphing into 7Ps for services, other marketing paradigms such as holistic marketing, societal marketing, cause related marketing have emerged. The simplistic premise that satisfying customers by supplying good products, reasonably priced and with a strong distribution network will no longer help a marketer retain today’s customer. There is a need for continuous evaluation of the customers and their movement and marketing therefore becomes more customer-centric and customized than ever before. To survive in this competitive market, the marketer of today has to be constantly on his toes, trying to develop competitive advantages and core competencies. Today’s customer is fickle, and rarely stay with the same brand for long, and customer attrition is threatening to overtake customer retention, and the market is increasingly turning volatile in nature. It is thus not surprising that in certain contexts the strategies used by today’s marketers fail to display a deep understanding of the market and its customers. In this situation marketing analytics can play a huge role in gauging the market ad enable reliable predictions for the future.

Marketing Analytics overview:

Marketers of yore were highly dependent on market information and research outcomes for taking their business decisions. But in today’s world there are colossal sources of information from different perspectives and each one has their own potential use and impact. It is quite difficult for a marketer to delve into each area and glean critical information without the use of specialised tools and lagging behind in this area may doom them to failure. Marketing analytics, which is a process of manipulating and interpreting data, which offers a way out to take better marketing decisions. It helps marketers to understand the dynamics of their business, anticipate market shifts and assess risks. When marketer takes any kind of business decision, there is a dire need to anticipate the outcome of this decision. To do that there is a need for judgment using past activities as the benchmark and understand the impact of changes in the immediate, medium term and long term future. The challenge is to match these three and anticipate the direct and indirect effects in the marketing outcomes. These are usually categorised as descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics. Descriptive analytics helps the marketer to understand to what happened in the past and alerts the marketer regarding the actions needed to minimize the negative impacts.  Predictive analytics is perhaps the most important tool to identify what will happen next and carry out ‘what if’ analysis. These two questions can be effectively addressed by using predictive models and randomized testing. Thus, if we reduce the price of a product can it lead to increase in customer buying or if marketer increases the price, or promotion through different media or reduction in some content what could be the effect on business? The major advantage of analytics is to handle the market data coming from different sources and in different formats. It enables the marketer to clearly distinguish between past, current and future trends, allowing him to forecast consumer behavior before it actually occurs. By using audience profiling data in terms of geographic, demographic, behavioral categories, it proceeds to predict what customers want, allowing marketers to be proactive, upselling products, creating long-term relationships with consumers and determining market shifts before rival brands. We can summarise that marketing analytics as below.

  • Data driven market prediction and decision.
  • Gives alerts marketer based on past records (Descriptive analytics).
  • Helps to take decision looking into current trend and policy implementation (Predictive analytics).
  • Helps to identify best possible opportunities through trial and error (Randomized effect),
  • What is the best that can be done (Prescriptive analytics)?
  • More focused decision making by using different characteristics of market/ consumer data.
  • Helps to improve business forecasting.

Major Functional areas of Marketing Analytics:

Day by day the role of analytics is expanding in different areas of business, led by large corporations who applying analytics to their decision are making process as never before. They see this process as much more efficient compared the traditional way of prediction and precautions in business decisions.  The major areas, where analytics is finding use are development of branding in term of brand personality, brand equity and brand architecture. The other areas of deployment are customer management, product design, price strategy, distribution system, and promotional development, and customer service. Companies are thus using analytics to enable faster and fact based decision making and this is turning point for he marketer to enjoy competitive advantage in market. Data driven decision making helps organizations not only to make better strategic decisions, but also enjoy high operational efficiency, improved customer satisfaction, and robust profit and revenue levels. In terms of customer acquisition and retention, the analytics provide a huge positive impact improving customer profitability and reduce churn.  Thus, marketing analytics helps marketers to

  • Develop effective branding strategy
  • Identify prospect in terms of customer management
  • Enable faster and fact based decision making
  • High operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
  • Right decision in right time.

#PositiveCorona

July, 2020, the world is facing an unprecedented situation, the Covid 19 pandemic. This has struck us hard. Yet as is said every cloud has a silver lining. The human race is perhaps trying to cope with the toughest situation ever. Despite of so many negative aspects, these dark times have introduced us to some wonderful qualities and capacities of mankind. And of course not to forget electronics and telecommunication technology. That has proved itself to be one of man’s best inventions and his most trusted friend. In these odd times, seclusion from society and isolation have come up as acclaimed safety measures. But humans are social beings by instinct and love to thrive in communities. Therefore, we have denied detachment from our job, our duties and above all our friends and fellow beings. And in this anti-seclusion movement, electronic communication has offered an unwavering support. Herein lies a significant positive outcome of the world-wide pandemic. Electronic communication was already there from the last few decades. However, it was never this strong. The pandemic challenge has assisted digital communication to attain unprecedented height and flawless efficiency. Various new career aspects and employment opportunities have opened up based on this. Social sites such as Facebook, Twitter etc and official communication platforms such as Google mails, Microsoft, Outlook etc. are principally governed by efficient computer programming. These days such soft communication happens to be the only fuel that has kept the world running. Therefore, programming skills are being sought after. Huge man power is required to meet such growing demand. This has opened up new horizons of employment for programmers and engineers. Besides, though physical fabrication of electronic devices and subsequent equipment in labs may be suffering a bit, yet simulation based research is on a boom. Software development ideas are widely welcome by the companies. Creating sources of employment for talented engineers who can think out of the box. Such wide acceptance and necessity are encouraging people to actually implement software start-ups.

There are other new positive aspects as well. On-line courses are steadily gaining popularity. In developing countries like India, many students are not able to access renowned institutes and universities in person. But on-line courses are offering them wonderful opportunities to actually be a part of those institutions and learn from them. And this has been possible because of this pandemic crisis. Otherwise our society has never heartily accepted on-line education despite of its huge potential.

The other important positive aspect of Covid pandemic and subsequent lock down is the healing of Mother Earth. Reduced plying of vehicles,  no industrial waste, no mining of earth’s treasure and the temporarily frozen urban civilization have resulted in a purified atmosphere. There is no denying the fact that the air around us is more pure, the sky is clearer than ever, the water bodies are back to their pristine states. Yes, Mother Earth has recovered from the insufferable loss that this unreasonably fast paced urbanization has caused. We all hope that we have learned our lesson and would not repeat the same mistakes.

Moreover, forced isolation has made us realise the importance of acquaintance and personal company. We now know, how much we miss our friends and associates and how much we care for them. Last but not the least these lock down periods have successfully reminded us the glories of family time. Let’s care, let’s communicate, let’s support each other and let’s be human. The combined strength of mankind’s heartfelt emotion and brain stormed innovation will definitely overcome this pandemic crisis.
