Center For Research And Innovation

Due to stressed relationship between basic and applied research, the linking to the “think global, act local” is always a challenge in scientific research. Similarly, in innovation field the dynamic pivots around both ‘research for innovation’ and ‘research on innovation’. Moreover, Innovation which often happens outside academic environment through amalgamation of inventive thinking and creative experimentation, would be required to nurture by providing an organized research eco-system.

ADAMAS University, Kolkata which has the large base of highly talented students both under-graduate (UG) and post-graduate (PG), research scholars and knowledgeable faculty members, is now poised for launching the “Centre for Research and Innovation (CRI)” under the leadership and guidance of Founder Chancellor Professor Samit Ray at its ADAMAS Knowledge City (AKC), Barasat campus. At CRI, Barasat both research and innovation would be encouraged and nurtured by providing and facilitating necessary mentoring and infrastructural facilities to its UG & PG students, researchers as well as other innovators so that it could be taken to the next level and at a greater height for serving better to the society in the widest sence.

The CRI, Barasat will be led by Dr A Mukhopadhaya, Ex-Advisor, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi as Chairman and Professor Chiranjib Chakrabartty as Director of the Centre.

Prof. (Dr.) Amalesh Mukhopadhaya (Chairman of CRI)

Prof. A Mukhopadhyay, a trained Engineer completed his academics from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. After a brief stop-over at Petro-chemical Industry, he engaged himself almost three decades with the Department of Science and Technology under Union Ministry of Science and Technology at various capacities in the Ministry/ Department towards promotion of science and technology in India. He is credited for evolving and successful implementation of many programs/ schemes, like R&D Infrastructure, Innovation in Pursuit of Science for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) etc. He also has published around 25 Papers in various National and International Journals. A widely traveled person both inside and outside the country is an elected Fellow of the West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology (WAST), Kolkata.

Prof. (Dr.) Chiranjib Chakravartty (Dean of School of Life Science & Biotechnology, Director of CRI)

Prof. Chiranjib Chakraborty received his Ph.D. degree (research work carried out the Marine Aquarium and Research Centre – 2001) from Vidyasagar University, India. He did his post-Doc research from the University of Massachusetts, USA. Dr. Chakraborty currently holds the following positions: (1) Dean and Professor, School of Life Science and Biotechnology; (2) Director, Incubation and Innovation. He was former Professor, Galgotias University, Greater Noida, India and former Associate Professor, VIT University, Vellore, India. Dr. Chakraborty is also a visiting Professor at Institute for Skeletal Aging & Orthopedic Surgery (College of Medicine), Hallym University, South Korea.

He was Visiting Research Fellow, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong and Visiting Scientist, ISI, Kolkata, and Visiting Research Professor, National Sun Yat-sen University; Kaohsiung; Taiwan.
He is Associate Editor of ‘Frontiers in Pharmacology’ and member of the Editorial Boards of Scientific Reports (Nature group), ‘Interdisciplinary Sciences: Computational Life Sciences (Springer),’ etc.

His current research is broadly in the fields of structural bioinformatics, diabetes, miRNA, structural & functional biology of medically significant proteins related to diseases pathway. Professor Chakraborty has more than 116 SCI publications and five books and two edited books. He has more than 2200 citations with h-index 25 and i10 index 54. His research work and citation can be viewed at Google Scholar: http://scholar.google.co.in/citations?hl=en&user=3m8rwpUAAAAJ

Dr. Maharshi Krishna Deb (Associate Director of Centre for Research & Innovation (CRI), Assistant Professor)

Dr. Deb began his scientific career as a PhD student in Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in France on scholarship from Ministère de l’ Enseignement supérieur, de la Recherche et de l’Innovation (MESRI). At CNRS he worked under the mentorship of Dr. Didier Trouche who is the Director of CNRS in Toulouse, where his work uncovered how epigenetic stress mediated genome-wide accumulation of read-through antisense RNAs triggers cellular senescence which is arguably the most critical failsafe mechanism that counteracts tumorigenesis. He was simultaneously also involved in a project at Leibniz Institute on Aging in Germany that linked the identification of an evolutionary conserved regulator of entry and exit of pluripotency to organ homeostasis and regeneration.

Subsequently, he joined Stanford University as a postdoctoral scholar at the Stanford Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (ISCBRM) in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology in Stanford School of Medicine. He worked with Prof. Roger Pedersen and under co-mentorship of the pioneers like Gairdner laureate Prof. Azim Surani (International Gairdner Award 2018, Discovered Genomic Imprinting, Single-Cell RNA-seq and specifier of mammalian and more recently human germline) from University of Cambridge and NIH Distinguished Investigator Dr. Shiv Grewal (Discovered the mechanism of heterochromatin assembly) from National Institutes of Health (NIH). His work appealed to Nobel laureates like Prof. Andrew Fire (Nobel Prize 2006), a pioneer in gene silencing by RNA interference (RNAi) from Stanford University, who fondly agreed to guide him. Owing to the relevance of his work to maternal and child health, he has been the member of Maternal and Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI) at Stanford School of Medicine.
