Introduction to the Programme
The B.A. History (Specialisation in Heritage Studies) is an interdisciplinary undergraduate programme designed to situate the study of the past within the broader framework of the Humanities and Social Sciences while responding to emerging global trends in heritage, tourism, and cultural resource management. In recent decades, the meaning of history has expanded beyond the classroom and archive to include museums, monuments, heritage cities, cultural landscapes, digital archives, and the creative industries. This programme recognises that heritage today is not only about preserving the past but also about understanding identity, community, sustainability, and the cultural economy in contemporary society.
Rooted in the rich historical and cultural traditions of World in general and India in particular, the course provides a strong foundation in Indian and world history while developing specialised training in heritage studies. It introduces students to the dynamic relationship between history, memory, culture, and public life. Through the integration of historical scholarship with practical skills, the programme reflects the growing importance of heritage as a field that connects academic knowledge with real-world applications in tourism, museums, archives, policy, and cultural entrepreneurship.
Within the Humanities and Social Sciences, history plays a central role in understanding how societies evolve, how institutions develop, and how cultures interact. This programme emphasises the interdisciplinary nature of historical inquiry by drawing from fields such as archaeology, art history, anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, and environmental studies. Students learn how historical knowledge informs debates on identity, nation-building, cultural diversity, sustainability, and globalisation. By linking historical understanding with contemporary social and cultural concerns, the programme prepares students to engage critically with the present while remaining grounded in the past.
The course is particularly aligned with new global trends in heritage and tourism. The rapid growth of heritage tourism has created demand for professionals who can interpret historical sites, manage cultural resources, and develop sustainable tourism practices. Heritage is increasingly viewed as a driver of economic development, community engagement, and cultural diplomacy. From heritage walks and museum exhibitions to digital storytelling and archival preservation, the field now requires graduates who possess both historical knowledge and practical skills.
Students will explore themes such as the history of Bengal and India, art and architectural traditions, paintings and material culture, museum studies, archival management, and heritage tourism. The programme also incorporates field-based learning through visits to museums, heritage sites, archives, and cultural institutions. This experiential approach helps students understand how historical knowledge is produced, preserved, and communicated to wider audiences.
In addition, the programme supports preparation for civil services and competitive examinations by building strong analytical, research, and communication skills. Graduates will be equipped to pursue careers in heritage management, tourism, research, museums, archives, education, media, and public policy.Overall, the B.A. History (Heritage Studies) responds to the growing need for professionals who can connect the past with the future, ensuring that cultural heritage is preserved, interpreted, and shared in meaningful and sustainable ways.
